Accent Studies for Snare Drum

The essence of snare drum performance is found in the contrast between accents and taps. Accents provide the emphasised peaks of a rhythmic phrase, while the taps create the textured transitions between them. Mastering this contrast is the foundation of good snare drum technique.

Accent Studies for Snare Drum presents a rigorous framework for the reading, interpretation, and performance of accent figures:

  • Part I: Accent Studies – 13 detailed studies across all subdivisions, establishing the physical choreography required to contrast accents from taps with precision.

  • Part II: Interpretations – 16 interpretative variations, ranging from simple flams to complex frisé and sticking substitutions, transforming simple phrases into diverse musical ideas.

  • Part III: Sticking Studies – 20 rhythmically diverse sticking studies exploring alternative sticking concepts, comprising the use of paradiddle variations, measured rolls, and mixed sticking approaches.

Performance Studies for Snare Drum

Learning challenging musical pieces is one of the most effective ways to learn an instrument. The Performance Studies series of books presents challenging solos for study and performance.

Foundation Studies, the first in the series, introduces foundational vocabulary common across all styles of snare drum performance. Rudimental vocabulary, accents, contemporary techniques, compositional concepts, and musical devices are progressively introduced across 20 studies that span many styles, meters, and traditions.

The pieces present an array of challenges, including different roll types, tuplets and odd time signatures, syncopated rhythmic themes, and diverse stylistic ideas. New students will find a rigorous introduction to snare drum performance, while experienced players will find challenging passages and new ideas to invigorate their repertoire.
